Chapter Eight

Gabby stared up into his gray eyes and noted the determination in them. Her throat constricted at his words. He’d come back for her?

“Believe it,” he whispered, his expression intense. “I used my parents as an excuse to get back here because I couldn’t admit to myself that I need you the way I do. We have something between us, Gabby. It’s something that time doesn’t erase.” He stared at her a moment and nodded his head. “I can see it in your eyes. You know exactly what I’m talking about. We need each other, Gabby.”

He stood up and paced the small room a few times and then stopped on the other side of the desk. “Why haven’t you moved on? Why are you sitting in the shitty office running a convenience store? You’re smarter and made for more than this,” he said, motioning around the room. “My guess is that you couldn’t leave, because you knew that one day I’d see the error in my decisions and come back for you.”

Gabby looked away from him, his words stinging because they were true. She’d never moved away from the area because she’d hoped that one day he would return. Shaking her head, she felt like such a transparent loser.

He knelt down in front of her. “I’m right, aren’t I, Gabby?”

She palmed his cheek and rubbed her thumb over his whiskers. He leaned into her hand and closed his eyes. “You feel so good,” he whispered. “It’s like I’ve been missing a part of me for so many years, and now, being here with you, I feel like I’m finally starting to become whole again.”

As she sat there with him kneeling in front of her, she sensed it as well. Her whole body warmed from the inside, the origin of the flame at the center of her heart. It all felt so right.

She struggled with her feelings, as she appreciated the way Lucas thawed her battered soul, but she couldn’t trust herself to open up to him again. She was afraid of the consequences.

“I’m so sorry, Gabby,” he whispered. “I fucked everything up so badly. Please, please forgive me.”

He gazed up at her, and she noted the sincere pain in his eyes. The hardened gray steel now looked like warm, liquid silver.

Sighing, she let go of him and sat back in her chair. “I don’t know what this means, Lucas. I don’t know what you want from me. Please explain it to me clearly.”

Lucas stood and took her hand in his, pulling her up from the chair. He placed his hand on her lower back and held her so their bodies were flush against each other. As she felt the hard planes of his chest and stomach, her body roared with need and desire.

She remembered the first time they had made love. It was the day before her eighteenth birthday. With Lucas being three years older than her, he had sworn they wouldn’t have actual sex until she was eighteen.
